On Thursday 6 November 2025, Pocklington School was delighted to welcome back Old Pocklingtonian Henry Laverack (03-10) as part of its Sixth Form Symposium programme of talks supported by the Pock Connects network. Henry, who runs the highly successful family butchery and bakery business Lavarack’s, shared his career journey and the alternative route he took after leaving school. His talk offered students a fascinating glimpse into the realities of managing a retail and wholesale enterprise, highlighting the importance of adaptability, resilience, and passion in business.

The session sparked lively discussion, with students asking thoughtful questions on topics such as the impact of Brexit and Covid on the local economy, pricing strategies in a competitive market, and maintaining quality and customer trust. Henry also emphasised the human side of business, reminding students that success is not just about profit but about enjoying your work and the people you work with.

Reflecting on his experience, Henry commented:

“There’s no single path to success. What matters most is finding something you enjoy and surrounding yourself with people who share your values.”

OPs and members of the Pocklington School community interested in connecting with the Pock Connects network, or sharing their career journeys, are encouraged to contact the OP Office, or to join the Pock Connects group on LinkedIn.
