Dr Edwin Thornton Swarbrick (55-62). Born on 29 April 1945, Edwin attended Pocklington School from 1955 to 1962. During his time at School, he threw himself into a wide range of activities, reflecting the breadth of his interests and talents. He represented the School in swimming, gaining Colours in 1962, played for the 3rd XV rugby team, served as a Corporal in the Combined Cadet Force, and was an active member of the Music Society, Choir and Orchestra.

In 1962, Edwin was awarded a prestigious English-Speaking Union Scholarship to attend Wilbraham Academy, an independent, college-preparatory school in Massachusetts, USA. The opportunity for a Gap year before beginning his medical studies, was transformational. He spent a year in America which he later reflected, "changed my life in innumerable subtle ways."

After returning to the UK, Edwin studied medicine at St George's Hospital Medical School in London and went on to enjoy an outstanding career in gastroenterology. Appointed as Wolverhampton's first Consultant Gastroenterologist, initially at The Royal Hospital and later at New Cross Hospital, he became a pivotal figure in the development of gastrointestinal endoscopy in the UK.

Edwin played a major role in the national modernisation of endoscopy services, helping to shape training, research and clinical standards across the country. He was instrumental in establishing one of the UK's first endoscopy training schools, laying foundations that would eventually lead to the creation of the Midlands Endoscopy Training Academy at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT). His work also contributed significantly to the development of the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

A respected clinician, teacher and researcher, Edwin published extensively on both gastrointestinal endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease. He served as Clinical Director for Research and Development at the RWT, helping to establish it as one of the leading research Trusts in the Midlands. He later became Vice President for Endoscopy at the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).

Paying tribute, Professor Colin Rees, BSG President described Edwin as "an inspirational figure", noting the profound influence he had on colleagues and trainees throughout his career.

Away from medicine, Edwin enjoyed fishing and horse riding and had a lifelong appreciation of the arts. Following his retirement, he enrolled to study for a degree in the History of Art, embracing a new academic challenge with characteristic enthusiasm.

Despite his many professional commitments, Edwin maintained a strong connection with Pocklington School and the OP Association throughout his life. He attended numerous Old Pocklingtonian events over the years, including the annual London Dinner, which he helped organise in 1979.

His adventurous spirit remained undimmed in later life. In 2012, he took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, joining the yacht Visit Finland for the leg from San Francisco to New York via the Panama Canal. The journey held particular significance for Edwin, who recalled arriving in New York aboard the Queen Mary years earlier to take up his English-Speaking Union Scholarship. During the race he enjoyed a mini reunion with fellow Old Pocklingtonian Paul Kay (56-60) and used the challenge to raise funds for the School's John Dolman Foundation.

Edwin will be remembered not only for his pioneering contribution to British medicine, but also for his intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit, and sense of adventure.

He died peacefully on Saturday 24 January 2026, aged 80 and is survived by his wife, Corinne, and their two sons.
