Double first in Classical Tripos at Jesus College, Cambridge. Lieutenant-Colonel in Directorate of Military Intelligence in WW2. Educationalist. Headmaster of Abingdon School from 1947 to 1970. Principal architect of the independent schools' assisted places scheme. Died in 1999.
