An array of Pocklington School talent will be bringing Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods to the Grand Opera House, York in December – directed by OP Robert Readman (73-80) and starring Pock sixth form leaver Will Campbell-Burrell, fifth former Sam Hird, Pock mum Susannah Baines and Pock dad Mark Hird.
Sondheim’s fabulous musical features the inter-weaving tales of well-loved fairy tale characters. And this production by Pick Me Up Theatre is a great chance to see the full stage show before Disney’s movie version hits cinema screens in the New Year.
If you don’t know the show, it all starts with a Baker and his Wife heading into the woods on a quest to reverse a curse laid on them by the Witch next door (Susannah Baines). Along the way they encounter nice but dim Jack of Beanstalk fame (Sam Hird), Cinderella, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood and her wolf (Will Campbell-Burrell, who also plays Cinderella’s Prince), and a Mysterious Man (Mark Hird).
They all have fervent wishes – but as the old adage says, be careful what you wish for…When everyone’s wishes are granted, the consequences of their self-centred actions come back to haunt them.
Eventually they learn a moving life lesson about working together, the stories we tell our children, and the real meaning of “happily ever after.”
Tickets for the show December 3-6 are available from http://www.atgtickets.com/ or the Grand Opera House Box Office in person.
