Joe Hodgson (1995-2002) spent much of last year adapting a series of Land Rovers for use in the opening sequences of the new Bond film, Skyfall. With a news embargo in place, Joe has not been able to speak about his secret mission until the film’s release.
Joe said “The Land Rover Defender is asked to do some incredible manoeuvres, way beyond the capability of the actors and had to be driven by a stunt man, but the actor needed to be behind the wheel. I built a metal pod on top of the Landy cab and Ben Collins, the former BBC Top Gear Stig, drove the vehicle from up there. It meant extending all the controls up on to the roof, which was quite a challenge. We used twelve identical Landys and each was carefully battered with identical dents, scratches and bullet holes.” In addition to adapting the Land Rovers, Joe was kept very busy when he was whisked away to Turkey to make some last-minute alterations to the vehicles between sequences.
Joe, originally from Everingham, is based in Maidenhead and has now returned to his usual duties of adapting old Land Rovers to unique specification for export to the USA.
