Helen Rogers (04-06) is the co-author of an evidence-based article on the prevention and control of tooth decay in erupting permanent molars that appeared in the March 2015 issue of Dental Update, the leading peer-reviewed clinical dental journal for CPD and education.
The article entitled ‘Why, What and How: Caries Control for Erupting Molars’ aims to update dental practitioners on the various techniques and interventions available to prevent or control caries (tooth decay) during the high-risk period when children start getting their adult molar teeth through.
The article considers the evidence to support provision of toothbrushing advice, placement of fissure sealants and fluoride varnish application, along with more novel methods. An evidence-based protocol is suggested to help the practitioner determine when further intervention is required and what action to undertake.
