Robin Hall (1953-1961) went to Churchill College recently to attend a reception for the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Canon Noel Duckworth (1958-1961) by Noel’s nephew, James Duckworth (1947-1957). A lunch followed to celebrate the biography ‘Canon Noel Duckworth: An Extraordinary Life’ written by Michael Smyth. The event was well attended and included speeches by the Master of Churchill, James Duckworth and Michael Smyth.
The Rev. John Noel Duckworth was appointed to the post of School Chaplain at Pocklington in 1958 by the headmaster, Pitts-Tucker. He was a Cambridge and British Olympic cox, a prisoner of war whose fortitude in Japanese camps had won him the respect and love of many who shared that fearful experience, and was latterly a missionary in Ghana. Duckworth left the school in 1961 to become Chaplain of Churchill College, Cambridge.
