Ashley Hamer’s (1999-2006) final-year project as part of her MA in Broadcast Journalism won the Student Journalist of the Year award at the 2012 Mind Media Awards recently.
For the project Ashley self-directed, filmed and edited a 15-minute documentary following the story of a single mother and her 12-year-old son who regularly self-harms to highlight the issue of self harm among the under-18s which is increasing in the UK at an alarming rate. Her intimate portrayal and excellent journalistic skills won her the award which she received at a prestigious awards ceremony held at the British Film Institute on London’s South Bank on 19 November. Stephen Fry, President of the charity Mind, presented her with the award.
